A Framework to Explain the Relation Between ICT and Development: Combining Affordances and the Capability Approach
2019
Part 1: Pushing the Boundaries - New Research Methods, Theory and Philosophy in ICT4D; International audience; In this paper, we suggest a framework to better explain the relation between ICT and development. The framework combines two theories: The Capability Approach and Affordances. The capability approach defines development as freedom of choice; and the affordances explains the relational aspects of people and technology. These two theories complement each other by connecting the means (technology) to the ends (development). A case study of ICT and study-circle education in rural areas of Kenya is used to illustrate the framework. Using the framework, the study revealed how actualizati…
Agents of change: Women in top management and corporate environmental performance
2020
International audience; We analyze the influence of gender diversity in top management on the environmental performance of French firms. Consistent with gender socialization theory, which posits that women are raised from childhood to be more nurturing and compassionate for others, we find that firms with more women in top management exhibit higher environmental performance. This result extends those already reported in the literature regarding the effect of gender diversity at board level. We also show that women in top management are associated with several key indicators such as development of eco‐friendly products and commitment to resource reduction. Furthermore, we find that the influ…
Forecasting Changes in Religiosity and Existential Security with an Agent-Based Model
2018
We employ existing data sets and agent-based modeling to forecast changes in religiosity and existential security among a collective of individuals over time. Existential security reflects the extent of economic, socioeconomic and human development provided by society. Our model includes agents in social networks interacting with one another based on the education level of the agents, the religious practices of the agents, and each agent's existential security within their natural and social environments. The data used to inform the values and relationships among these variables is based on rigorous statistical analysis of the International Social Survey Programme Religion Module (ISSP) and…

A blended-learning programme regarding professional ethics in physiotherapy students.
2018
Background: In the university context, assessing students’ attitude, knowledge and opinions when applying an innovative methodological approach to teach professional ethics becomes fundamental to know if the used approach is enough motivating for students. Do board characteristics affect environmental performance? A study of EU firms
2019
This paper explores the relationship between board characteristics and environmental performance. We adopt a triple perspective of environmental performance, focussing on emissions (waste and CO2), resource consumption (water and energy), and the implementation of environmental initiatives. The sample comprises 644 nonfinancial European Union–based companies. The data cover the period 2002 to 2017. The results confirm that gender diversity and the existence of a corporate social responsibility committee are positively associated with the firms' environmental performance. This finding is consistent with the view that the educational background, talent, and experience of women help promote su…
Ensuring the Consistency of Biosimilars
2017
Background: Biological products are subject to constant reappraisal by regulatory agencies and pharmaceutical companies once they have entered the market, since every improvement in their manufacturing process has the potential to alter the basic properties of these molecules. Methods: Narrative review focusing on scientific literature as well as legal documents from regulatory agencies. Results: Evaluating the impact of each manufacturing change of these drugs requires rigorous analyses in proportion to the anticipated risk of inducing more or less molecular micro-heterogenicity. There are currently more than 30 biosimilars of TNF-alpha blockers at different stages of testing, each with a …
Patient’s Cross-border Mobility Directive: Application, Performance and Perceptions Two Years after Transposition
2016
Abstract This paper seeks to analyse the directive on the application of patients’ rights in cross-border healthcare. Two years after the transposition, it is time for first evaluations of its application, performance and perception. The analysis consists of three major elements: reconstruction of the legal scope and subject matter of the new legislation, conclusions of the evaluative reports monitoring its implementation and performance as well as the public opinion polls revealing the EU citizens’ perception of its details. These three components combined together deliver a picture of the state of play about the pan-European cross-border patients’ mobility. The bottomline conclusions nega…
